Vila Pouca de Aguiar will host European Cycle Tourism Week in 2024
The Portuguese Cycling Federation—Cycling for All, the European Cycle Tourism Union, and the Vila Pouca de Aguiar City Council signed an agreement on Thursday, June 15, to jointly organize the 2024 European Cycle Tourism Week, which will take place from June 29 to July 6, 2024. As agreed, the chosen venue will be the town of Vila Pouca de Aguiar. During that week, hundreds of cyclists will take to the roads of the Trás-os-Montes region each day.
The 18th edition of European Cycle Tourism Week will mark the event’s return to Portugal, which hosted the 2019 edition in Belmonte, and will promote the Alto Tâmega region, Alvão, and part of the Douro as a cycling tourism destination, with the participation of about a thousand cyclists from all over Europe.
“This is the second edition of European Cycle Tourism Week that we will be organizing, following Belmonte in 2019, and it is very important to us. We expect about a thousand European cycling tourists to attend, in a region that is very welcoming to cyclists,” said Delmino Pereira, president of the Portuguese Cycling Federation.

“Following Belmonte, the European Cycle Tourism Week in Vila Pouca de Aguiar will be an extraordinary opportunity to engage our partners—particularly local clubs and associations—who know this area so well and will welcome our international guests like no one else. “We are confident that this will be another great success,” says Sandro Araújo, vice president of the UPV-FPC and director of the event’s organizing committee.
In addition to the two representatives from the UPV-FPC, Alberto Machado, mayor of Vila Pouca de Aguiar, was also present at the signing of the agreement. “You’ll feel right at home! This region is the most beautiful in Portugal, and the people of Trás-os-Montes have a tradition of warmly welcoming our visitors,” the mayor promised.
Patrice Godart, president of the European Cycle Tourism Union, emphasized how pleased he and the European cycle tourists were to return to Portugal to ride their bikes and hopes for a turnout worthy of the event.
