UECT 2022 EUROPEAN CYCLOTOURING WEEK IN MEPPEL (NETHERLANDS)

defi paris bucarest casiopeeraOriginally planned in Andenne (Belgium), but following the July 2021 floods, this town is no longer able to host the 2022 European Cyclotouring Week.

Organised by UECT, the 16th European Cyclotouring Week will take place from 9 to 16 July 2022 in the Netherlands. Cyclotourists from all over Europe will be welcomed in Meppel, a town of 34,000 inhabitants located in the province of Drenthe in the north-west of the Netherlands.

The province of Drenthe offers landscapes typical of Holland with its canals, windmills, Saxon farmhouses and many picturesque villages, such as Giethoorn (the Venice of the North), 10 km from Meppel.

Founded in 1422, the village of Meppel developed in the 16th century thanks to peat extraction, and over time became a trading town, as it still is today.

The presence of many canals has earned Meppel the nickname of Klein-Amsterdam.

The pedestrian streets of the historic town centre and the Oud-Zuid district let you visit the Grote de Mariakerk church and its tower built in 1422, its two still-operating windmills - Molen de Weert and Molen de Vlijt - and the Drukkerijmuseum.

Sport Park Ezinge - Ambachtsweg 11 - Meppel (located 1.8 km from the town centre) will host the Federal Campsite across 8 mostly grassy, enclosed and secure areas (total capacity 480 pitches and 200 electrical hook-ups), as well as catering and the reception desk during this UECT European Cyclotouring Week.

The Sport Park will also be the start/finish point of the various road routes that will let you discover this part of Northern Europe where cycling is part of daily life. Three each day (40-80-120 km), Monday to Friday, these easy routes will take you through typical landscapes.

For accompanying persons, the programme of visits will focus exclusively on tourist sites and local crafts, with French- and English-speaking guides.

You will find information on the website www.uect.org in the section European Weeks - Meppel 2022 and the registration form on the same site.
